Sophomore Nolan Polley upset 38th-ranked Bryan Koniecko in No. 2 singles for the Wisconsin mens tennis teams only point in a 6-1 loss to No. 7 Ohio State Sunday afternoon at the Stickney Tennis Center.
Wisconsin finishes the regular season with a 10-11 overall record and a 3-7 mark in Big Ten Conference play. Ohio State (22-1, 10-0 Big Ten) clinched the conference title with the win and will be the top seed heading into this weekends Big Ten championship in Minneapolis.
Polley (Lexington, Ky.) ended his regular season in impressive fashion with a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set victory against No. 38 Koniecko. Polley won his last five matches to finish 16-5 in the regular season and 8-2 in Big Ten play. The loss dropped Koniecko to 22-7 this season.
UW could not gain another singles win and was swept in the doubles by OSU. Polley and Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) finished the dual meet season with a 10-4 record after dropping their regular-season finale to the countrys top-rated doubles tandem of Scott Green and Ross Wilson 8-3 in the No. 1 singles match. The duo of Green and Wilson finished the regular season 27-2 while the Buckeye won the doubles point in all 22 dual matches this season.
The Big Ten mens tennis championship will be held Thursday, April 27 through Sunday, April 30 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
