The No. 4 Illinois mens tennis team defeated Wisconsin Sunday afternoon, 6-1, in Champaign, Ill. The Badgers fell to 8-12 on the season, 2-7 in the Big Ten as the Illini improved to a perfect 7-0 in the conference, 17-3 overall.
Illinois captured the doubles point, winning two of three matches. Badger freshman Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) and junior Mark Weinig (Aurora, Colo.) notched the sole victory at the No. 3 slot, defeating Conner Murnighan and Chris Martin, 9-7.
Illinis top pair Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe overpowered UWs duo Alex and Lachezar Kasarov (Bourgas, Bulgaria) 9-8.
In other doubles matches, UIs Evan Zeder and Pramod Dabir defeated Jordan Raemisch (Middleton, Wis.) and Steve Guntly (Genoa City, Wis.), 8-1.
Felipe Bellido (Lima, Peru) earned Wisconsins only singles victory, as he defeated Monte Tucker in three sets, 6-7, 7-6, 10-8, at the No. 4 position.
Senior Alex Kasarov battled to three sets with Ryler DeHeart, but fell to the fifth ranked junior, 6-2, 6-7, 10-7. DeHeart is now an impressive 36-8 on the year at the top spot.
Brian Ko (Teaneck, N.J.) also fell in three sets, losing to Dabir at the No. 5 slot, 6-4, 6-7, 8-10.
Wisconsin returns to the courts on Friday, April 22 to take on No. 30 Ohio State at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
