MADISON, Wis. – Former UW men’s tennis player Moritz Baumann advanced to the finals of the 2013 Futures Italy F3 tournament in Vercelli, Italy on Saturday.
Baumann got off to a strong start, defeating No. 3 seed Jonathan Eysseric, 7-6 (2), 6-4, in the first round of the tournament.
After taking Marco Crugnola, 7-5, 7-5, and Filippo Baldi, 6-4, 6-2, in the next two rounds, Baumann faced the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Yannick Mertens. With a trip to the finals at stake, Baumann defeated Mertens, 6-2, 6-3.
In the final round of the tournament, Baumann got off to a slow start, falling, 6-3, in the first set to the No. 6 seed Alberto Brizzi. Baumann went on to rally late in the second set, narrowly falling, 7-5, to Brizzi and clinching a second place finish in the tournament.
As a Badger, Baumann made three appearances in the NCAA singles tournament and was the first player in UW history to earn All-Big Ten honors in all four years.
