The Wisconsin men's tennis team posted wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots but could not pick up another win to give No. 30 Rice a 4-2 victory at the Baseline Tennis Center Saturday, Apr. 9 in Minneapolis, Minn. The loss moves the Badgers to 7-11 overall, while the Owls move to 12-5
In doubles play, the Owls swept the Badgers to take a 1-0 early lead. Rices 33rd-ranked No. 1 doubles duo of Robert Searle and Ben Harknett picked up an 8-1 win over UWs Alex and Lachezar Kasarov (Bourgas, Bulgaria).
Senior captain Alex Kasarov bounced back from the doubles loss to upset No. 25 Searle in the top singles battle. A. Kasarov outlasted Searle in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, improving to 13-14 overall. Freshman Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) was victorious as well, defeating Harknett, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 slot.
Unfortunately, the Badgers were unable to pick up any other matches, as they fell at the Nos. 3-6 positions. The Owls clinched the match at the No. 6 postion when Rodrigo Gabriel took down Wisconsins Mark Weinig (Aurora, Colo.), 6-4, 2-6, 6-3
The Badger men's tennis team is on the road again this coming weekend for a pair of Big Ten battles. Wisconsin will first take on No. 75 Purdue on Saturday, Apr. 16 in West Lafayette, Ind. UW then travels to Champaign, Ill. to square off with powerhouse Illinois. The Fighting Illi are ranked second nationally and currently have a 44 match winning streak in the Big Ten.
