After losing to Northwestern on Saturday, the No. 24 Wisconsin mens tennis team defeated Purdue 7-0 on Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Ind. The Badgers improve to 14-6 on the season, and move to 3-3 in the Big Ten with Sundays win.
The match started with doubles play, where the Badgers took two of three matches to win the doubles point. The No. 15 pair of sophomore Marek Michalicka and junior Moritz Baumann opened the day strong, as they defeated Slavko Bijelicka and Griff Nienberg 8-2 at the No. 1 position. Wisconsin clinched the doubles point when junior Luke Rassow-Kantor paired up with freshman Patrick Pohlmann at the No. 3 spot to defeat Eric Ramos and Thomas Wilson 8-4. At the No. 2 position, junior Michael Dierberger and senior Michael Muskievicz fell to Branko Kuzmanovic and P.J. Rose 8-5 to give the Boilermakers their only win on the day.
Leading 1-0, the Badgers took to the singles courts where they didnt let up. Pohlmann was first to finish, as the freshman made quick work of Ramos at the No. 3 spot. Pohlmann only gave up three games, as he defeated Ramos 6-2, 6-1. No. 31 Baumann then defeated Bijelicka 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 position to remain undefeated and move to 20-0 in singles. Wisconsin clinched the match when No. 47 Michalicka defeated Kuzmanovic 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 slot.
The Badgers would then record wins at the remaining singles positions to sweep the match. At the No. 4 spot, Dierberger defeated Rose 6-1, 7-5 to give the team a 5-0 lead. After losing the first set 2-6, Muskievicz came back to win the second and third sets 6-1, 6-4 to defeat Wilson at the No. 6 spot. Wisconsin would complete the sweep when sophomore Peter Marrack came in at the No. 5 position and defeated Nienberg 6-4, 6-4.
Wisconsin will head home next, as the Badgers will host No. 64 Iowa on Saturday, April 11, and No. 33 Minnesota on Sunday, April 12th. Both matches will begin at noon at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
