The Wisconsin mens tennis team captured its first Big Ten Conference dual victory of the season on Sunday, as it upset No. 75 Purdue in a 5-2 decision, at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. UW improved its record to 6-9 on the season and 1-3 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers dropped to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Badgers swept the doubles phase of the match, to capture the doubles point. 32nd- ranked duo senior co-captain David Hippee and junior Alex Kasarov toppled Dave Robinson and Troy Havens, 8-4, at the No. 1 spot, while senior co-captain Scott Green and freshman Pete Amundson defeated Sonak Chatterjee and Filip Koziell, 8-6 at No. 2.
Sophomores Ward Bortz and Mark Weinig took down Paul Rose and Warren Scott, 8-7 (8), in the tiebreaker at the third slot.
In singles, Wisconsin took four of the six match-ups. Finishing first for the UW, Hippee handled Chatterjee 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. He was followed by Bortz, who tackled Robinson 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.
Also posting wins for the Badgers, Weinig defeated Collin Foster 6-1, 6-4, and at the No. 1 spot, Kasarov downed Rose, 7-6, 2-6, (10-5), in the superbreaker.
Wisconsin aims to keep the momentum going as they take to the road this weekend. The Badgers will face Iowa and Minnesota on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
