UW won its 10th doubles point of the season and No. 113 Jeremy Sonkin won his third Big Ten singles match but the Wisconsin mens tennis team lost a 4-3 contest to Indiana Friday afternoon.
Wisconsin is 8-7 this season and are 1-3 in Big Ten Conference play. The Badgers are currently on a three-match losing streak. UW has taken the doubles point in 11 of its 15 matches this season.
The Badgers started the match in impressive fashion, winning the top two doubles matches. UW sophomores Nolan Polley and Jeremy Sonkin defeated IUs Dmytro Ishtuganov and Dara McLoughlin, 8-6, in the No. 1 match for their seventh win of the season. Wisconsins top duo improved to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten.
Wisconsin duo Lachezar Kasarov and Felipe Bellido clinched the doubles point by defeating Peter Antons and David Bubenicek, 8-6, in the No. 2 match. Kasarov and Bellido are now 4-0 in Big Ten play and 7-1 overall.
Sonkin, the nations 113th-rated player, secured Wisconsins second point by defeating IUs Dmytro Istuganov 7-6 (3), 6-3 in singles play. The win was Sonkins 12th of the season, all coming in the No. 1 position.
Bellido earned Wisconsins final point of the dual match after defeating IUs Michael McCarthy 6-2, 7-6 (6) for his 10th win of the season. Bellido improved to 10-4 in singles play and 9-3 in the No. 5 position.
Polley lost a heart-breaking 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision to Bubenicek in the contests clinching singles match. The loss is only Polleys fifth of the season and is 10-5 overall.
The Badgers conclude the weekend at noon Sunday against No. 46 Penn State in University Parks Sarni Tennis Center.
