The University of Wisconsin mens tennis team concluded its Spring Break trip with a 2-1 record following its 6-1 rout of Florida Atlantic Friday afternoon at Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Badgers (6-8) swept doubles and picked up five singles wins to add to their triumph against Indiana State on Monday, also at the University of Miami. The Owls (5-8), meanwhile, lost their second straight.
The win was a great way to finish our week, head coach Pat Klingelhoets said. We improved everyday, and our guys feel more comfortable playing outdoors now. We look forward to the rest of the season.
With a goal of trying to solidify a lineup, Wisconsin showed its skill from top to bottom. All three doubles teams posted 8-6 victories, including Elliott Bisnow and Jeremy Sonkin, both of whom defeated David Demers and Kevin Obletz at No. 2 to earn the doubles point.
Mark Weinig started off singles by breezing by Mauricio Paiz 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6, then Felipe Bellido downed J.P. Bounassar 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4.
Florida Atlantic then picked up its lone point of the contest by winning at No. 5 to cut the score to 3-1. But Alex Kasarov countered with his 6-4, 6-2 decision over Antonello Magris at No. 1 to clinch the match for UW.
Lachezar Kasarov followed up by knocking off Demers 6-4, 6-2 at the two spot, and Sonkin closed out the competition by taking down F.J. Schofield 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.
The Badgers return home to play host to Penn State at noon April 2 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
