The No. 48 University of Wisconsin mens tennis team fell to 14th-ranked Michigan 5-2 Friday night at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Badgers fall to 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines are now 12-2 and 3-0 in Big Ten action.
The Wolverines grabbed the early momentum by taking the doubles point. Michigan earned wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, while the Badgers took the win at No. 1.
Jason Jung and Mike Sroczynski won at No. 2 doubles with an 8-5 victory over senior Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) and sophomore Marek Michalicka (Ricany, Czech Republic). This was the first time that Sonkin and Michalicka had paired up with one another this year.
The No. 56 pair of Andrew Mazlin and Chris Madden recorded the victory at No. 3 doubles for Michigan, defeating the duo of sophomores Michael Dierberger (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Luke Rassow-Kantor (Westport, Conn.) 8-3. This too was the first time the two Wisconsin players had matched up with one another.
Wisconsin did salvage the match at No. 1 doubles. Senior Nolan Polley (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Moritz Baumann (Inzlingen, Germany) earned the win over the 20th-ranked team of Matko Maravic and George Navas, 9-7. Polley and Baumann improve to 4-3 on the season.
Michigan extended the lead to 2-0 with a victory at No. 5 singles. Peter Aarts knocked off senior Felipe Bellido (Lima, Peru) 6-3, 7-6. With the loss, Bellido falls to 7-3 on the season.
Wisconsin cut the lead to 2-1 with a victory at No. 2 singles. Polley, ranked No. 99, defeated Sroczynski with a three-set victory. After dropping the first set 6-3, Polley battled back and took the last two sets 6-4, 7-5 to improve to 10-3 on the season.
The Wolverines secured the victory with wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
Mazlin defeated Sonkin at No. 4 singles, while Madden downed Rassow-Kantor at No. 5. Sonkin took the first set 6-4, but Mazlin came back and won 7-6, 6-0 to drop Sonkin to 4-10 on the season. Rassow-Kantor also won his first set before falling. He pulled ahead 7-6, but Madden took the last to 6-2, 6-2 as Rassow-Kantor falls to 3-5 on the season.
Michalicka, ranked No. 120, made it 4-2 with a win at No. 3 singles He defeated No. 124 Jason Jung to improve to 14-0 on the season.
The Wolverines closed the scoring out with a win at No. 1 singles. No. 61 Maravic bested No. 44 Baumann 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
