The No. 29 Wisconsin Badgers fell to No. 24 Alabama 4-1 on Friday in the second round of the Blue Gray Tennis Classic. The match started at 11 am at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. and was all Crimson Tide.
The Badger duo of sophomore Marek Michalicka and junior Moritz Baumann, ranked No. 17, recorded Wisconsins only doubles win of the day at the No. 1 position. The pair defeated Mathieu Thibaudeau and Dan Buikema 8-4 to move to 11-2 on the season. However, Alabama won at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots to take the doubles point.
Alabama continued with their success in singles, as the team won the necessary three matches at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 positions to clinch the match. The Badgers only singles win came from No. 47 Baumann at the No. 1 position. Baumann defeated No. 32 Saketh Myneni 7-2, 7-6 and remains undefeated as the win improves his record to 15-0. No. 37 Michalicka was leading 4-1 in the second set after winning the first set 6-2 against No. 76 Mathieu Thibaudeau when the match was called. Juniors Luke Rassow-Kantor and Michael Dierberger were defeated at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots, while sophomore Peter Marrack fell at the No. 6 position.
With the loss, the Badgers drop to 10-5 overall this season, but look to improve on their 0-2 start to Big Ten play as Wisconsin plays host to Michigan and Michigan State on March 28 and 29.
