The No. 29-ranked Wisconsin Badgers defeated Hawaii 4-2 in the first round of the Blue Gray Tennis Classic on Thursday at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. The Badgers (10-4) were coming off two straight losses, both to Big Ten opponents.
Doubles play opened the match, where the Badgers started strong. At the No. 1 position, the No. 17 doubles pair of sophomore Marek Michalicka and junior Moritz Baumann won their match 8-3 to improve to 10-2 on the season. Wisconsin clinched the doubles point when the junior duo of Michael Dierberger and Michael Muskievicz defeated their opponents 8-4.
The singles got underway with the Badgers winning 1-0. Wisconsins Nos. 1-3 positions again came up big as the team earned each of singles points there to win the match. At the No. 1 position, No 47 Baumann dominated Dennis Lajola 6-2, 6-0, as he extends his unbeaten streak to 14. At the No. 2 slot, No. 37 Michalicka defeated Andreas Weber 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Patrick Pohlmann defeated Leo Rosenberg 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot. Junior Luke Rassow-Kantor and Dierberger recorded the Badgers only two losses at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions. At the No. 6 position, sophomore Peter Marrack won the first set 6-4, and was leading the second 3-1 when Wisconsin clinched the match.
