Sophomore Felipe Bellido recorded his sixth straight singles win but the No. 74 Wisconsin mens tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat to South Florida Friday afternoon on Tampas Varsity Tennis Courts.
Wisconsin (8-5, 1-1 Big Ten) had its six-match winning streak snapped but did manage to capture the doubles point for the fifth consecutive match. South Florida improved to 3-6 this season.
Sophomore Felipe Bellido (Lima, Peru) was part of both Wisconsin points. Bellido teamed with Lachezar Kasarov (Burgas, Bulgaria) in the decisive match of the doubles point. Bellido and Kasarov convincingly defeated Juan Berragan and Mark Gattiker, 8-4, to give the Badgers the first point of the match.
Sophomores Nolan Polley (Lexington, Ky.) and Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) defeated South Floridas Dirk Britzen and Fredy Barton, 9-8 (2) in the No. 1 match. Wisconsins top doubles team is now 6-0 this season and is one of only four undefeated tandems remaining in the Big Ten Conference.
Bellido earned Wisconsins only win in singles competition against USFs Dillon Brozyna. Bellido won his 15th match of the season in impressive fashion, 6-1, 6-0, for the UWs final point.
The Badgers resume Big Ten competition against Michigan March 25 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. First serve is set for noon.
