The No. 64 University of Wisconsin mens tennis team swept Furman 4-0 on the third day of the Blue Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala. on Saturday afternoon. The Badgers improve to 9-6 with the win, while Furman falls to 4-10.
Wisconsin struck first by taking the doubles point. The Badgers won at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. As a result, the No. 2 doubles match was stopped before completion.
Senior Nolan Polley (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Moritz Baumann (Inzlingen, Germany) were victorious at No. 1 doubles. The pair defeated the Furman duo of Chris Rhyne and Andrei Chvetsov 8-4 to move to 3-3 on the season.
The second victory in doubles came when senior Felipe Bellido (Lima, Peru) and sophomore Marek Michalicka (Ricany, Czech Republic) knocked off Bo Ladyman and Sawyer Duncan 8-6. Bellido and Michalicka are now 3-1 on the season.
The Badgers got wins at the No. 1, 3 and 4 positions. The other three matches were not competed due to the match having been decided.
Baumann got the win at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 win over Andy Juc. He is now 5-5 on the season and at the No. 1 spot.
Polley got the victory at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Daniel Knause. He has now won seven matches in a row and is 9-3 on the season.
Fellow senior Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) defeated Chris Motes 6-2, 7-6 at No. 4 to snap a two-match losing streak. With the victory Sonkin improves to 4-9 on the season.
