The No. 64 University of Wisconsin mens tennis survived a four rain delay and then knocked off No. 48 Fresno State 4-2 on the second day of the Blue Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala. on Friday. The Badgers match was set to begin at 8:30 a.m. but, due to rain, did not begin until around 12:45 p.m. Due to the delay, the doubles matches were only going to be played if necessary.
The Badgers (8-6) won four of the six singles matches to ensure that the doubles matches would not have to be played. The wins came at the first, second, third and fifth spots in the lineup.
Sophomore Moritz Baumann (Inzlingen, Germany) got the win at the No.1 spot with a victory over Rudolf Siwy. Baumann, ranked No. 50 in the country, won the match 6-4, 6-4 and is now 4-5 overall and at the No. 1 spot.
Fellow sophomore Marek Michalicka (Ricany, Czech Republic) had to rally but picked up the victory at No. 2 singles. Michalicka dropped the first set to No. 99 Mirko Zapletal 6-3, but fought back and was able to take the remaining sets 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Michalicka improves to 13-0 on the year and 6-0 at the No. 2 position.
Senior Nolan Polley (Lexington, Ky.) continued his stellar play with a win at No. 3 singles. Polley, who has now won his past six singles matches, defeated Tejesvi Veerepalli 6-2, 7-5. Polley improves to 8-3 on the year and 3-0 at No. 3 singles.
The Badgers fourth singles victory came at No. 5 where senior Felipe Bellido (Lima, Peru) was victorious. Bellido downed Martin Nilsson 6-3, 7-6 and is now 8-2 on the year and 4-1 at the No. 5 spot.
Fresno State (9-5) picked up its victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
At No. 4 singles, Denny Fafek bested Badger senior Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) 6-3, 6-2. Sonkin falls to 3-9 on the season, including a 1-4 mark at the No. 4 spot.
The second Bulldog win came when Siddharth Alapati topped Wisconsin freshman Peter Marrack (Mississauga, Ontario) 6-1, 6-3. Marrack, who had not played since the Feb. 20 match against Marquette, falls to 5-1 on the year and 0-1 at the No. 6 spot.
