The University of Wisconsin mens tennis team lost its first match in a month, as the team was defeated by No. 7 Illinois 4-3 in Champaign, Ill on Saturday night. The Badgers move to 9-3 this season, and 0-1 in the Big Ten as the match kicked off conference play.
The match started with doubles, where the Badgers only won one match, as the Illini took two to win the doubles point. The pair of junior Moritz Baumann and sophomore Marek Michalicka, who are ranked No. 16, recorded the only doubles win for the Badgers, as they defeated Billy Heiser and Ruan Roelofse 9-8 at the No. 1 spot. Freshman Patrick Pohlmann and sophomore Luke Rassow-Kantor fell 8-4 at the No. 2 position, while sophomore Peter Marrack and junior Michael Dierberger also were defeated 8-4, at the No. 3 spot.
The Badgers got their first point of the match when No. 72 Baumann defeated No. 55 Marc Spicijaric at the No. 1 position in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. However, Wisconsin was losing 3-1 shortly after that as sophomore Peter Marrack and Dierberger were defeated at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions in straight sets.
Wisconsin recorded its second win after Illinois had clinched the match, as Pohlmann defeated Roelofse 7-5, 6-7, 1-0. The match came to a close when No. 41 Michalicka defeated No. 29 Roy Kalmanovich in a third set tiebreak, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
