It was a tightly-contested match, but the No. 28 University of Wisconsin mens tennis team lost at No. 29 Vanderbilt 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn.
The Commodores (6-1) took the early lead by sweeping all three doubles matches.
The pair of Evan Dufaux and Adam Baker got things started by knocking off senior Nolan Polley (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Marek Michalicka (Ricany, Czech Republic) at the No. 3 spot with an 8-6 win.
A 9-8 (6) win by the team of Nick Cromydas and Bryant Salcedo over sophomores Moritz Baumann (Inzlingen, Germany) and Michael Dierberger (Milwaukee, Wis.) at No. 2 doubles gave the Commodores the clinching point.
Vanderbilt finished its sweep with a win at the No. 1 position. Vijay Paul and Ryan Preston bested the 26th-ranked duo of senior Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) and sophomore Luke Rassow-Kantor (Westport, Conn.) 9-8 (4).
Wisconsin (4-5) tied things up once singles play got underway as the 100th-ranked Polley made quick of the 79th-ranked Paul at No. 2 singles. Polley won easily 6-1, 6-1.
The Badgers then extended their lead to 2-1 when Michalicka was victorious at No. 3 singles. He defeated Cromydas 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Vanderbilt came back though to take a 3-2 lead with wins at No. 4 and No. 1 singles. Salcedo won over Sonkin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to win at the No. 4 spot, while Preston knocked off the 39th-ranked Baumann 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (3) in the matchs No. 1 spot.
The match was decided at No. 5 singles. Evan Dufaux topped Rassow-Kantor 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (9) to earn the victory for the Commodores.
The last match of the day came at No. 6 singles. Alex Zotov beat Dierberger 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4) 7-6 (9).
The Badgers return to action this Wednesday when they play host to Marquette. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
