The Badger mens tennis team fell to Ball State 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA in Muncie, Ind. Wisconsin drops to 2-4 (0-1 Big Ten) while the Cardinals improve to 4-3 (0-0 Mid-American).
UW began the match in a 1-0 hole after dropping all three doubles matches. Ball States 56th ranked duo of Matt Baccarani and Patrick Thompson overwhelmed Alex and Lacheczar Kasarov (Bourgas, Bulgaria) at the No. 1 position, 8-5.
In a tight match at the No. 3 spot, Elliott Bisnow (Washington, D.C.) and Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) fell to Klint Knable and Paul Newman, 9-8 (5). Completing the sweep for the Cardinals were Tony Epkey and Brad Rhodes, who outlasted Jordan Raemisch (Middleton, Wis.) and Mark Weinig (Aurora, Colo.) 8-5 at the No. 2 spot. The loss is just the second one of the season for the Badger pair.
In singles, Wisconsins Felipe Bellido (Lima, Peru) earned his second singles victory of the weekend defeating Thompson, 7-6 (4), 6-4 at the No. 5 position. The win puts Bellido 8-8 on the season. Senior captain, Alex Kasarov, defeated Baccarani, 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the top spot, giving UW its second victory of the day. The third point came from No. 2 Sonkin, who took down Matt Laramore in three sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. The freshman finished the weekend road trip with two singles victories.
The Cardinals prevailed though, claiming victories at the No. 3, 4, and 6 spots. No. 3 Bisnow nearly escaped defeat as he lost in three sets to Paul Newman, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Also falling for Wisconsin was Freshamn Brian Ko (Teaneck, N.J.) who lost to Knable, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 6 position and sophomore L. Kasarov at No. 3 to Tony Epkey, 6-4, 6-4.
The Badgers return to action at noon, Feb. 19 as they play host to Butler University at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
