Freshman Gian Hodgson earned a win in No. 6 singles as the University of Wisconsin mens tennis team lost its first match, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at fifth-ranked Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.
Wisconsin (3-1, 0-0 Big Ten) won one singles match and one doubles match against Pepperdine. While the Badgers suffered their first defeat of the season, the Waves improved to 8-0 highlighted by a 4-3 win at No. 1 Virginia.
Hodgson (Savaneta, Aruba) remains undefeated in singles play this spring after earning a three-set 7-6, 6-7, 11-9 victory against Denis Reinert. Hodgson is Wisconsins only undefeated singles player at 4-0. Reinert is now 3-2 this season for the Waves.
The doubles combination of Nolan Polley (Lexington, Ky.) and Felipe Bellido (Lima, Peru) moved to 4-0. Polley and Bellido are the Badgers lone undefeated doubles team after winning their second No. 3 match against Kevin Borzenski and Richard Johnson (8-7). Both of Wisconsins top two doubles tandems lost their first matches of the season and now stand 3-1.
Wisconsin returns to the midwest region next weekend for matches at Western Michigan next Saturday and at No. 23 Notre Dame. Both matches start at noon Central time.
