The No. 31-ranked Wisconsin men's tennis team improved to 5-0 after defeating Marquette 6-1 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium, Tuesday night in non-conference action. The Badgers handed the Golden Eagles their first dual loss of the season, also marking the first time they had dropped a decision in singles or doubles action.
The Badgers swept the Golden Eagles in all but one of the singles positions. At the No. 1 position, No. 117-ranked Moritz Baumann defeated Dusan Medan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. After losing the first set, No. 36-ranked Marek Michalicka battled back to win the next two, as he beat Trent Hagan, 4-6, 6-3. 6-4. At the No. 3 position, Luke Rassow-Kantor beat Stephan Shao in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 to improve to 3-2 in singles play this season.
Junior Michael Muskievicz recorded the only Badger loss of the night, as he fell to Mark Rutherford in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 4 spot. Playing at the No. 5 position, senior Michael Dierberger clinched the winning point for the Badgers as he defeated Juan-Martin Paredes 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Peter Marrack won his fourth singles match of the season as he beat Jonathan Schwerin 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6 slot.
Wisconsin won the doubles point as the team swept the Golden Eagles in all the matches. Playing at the No. 1 position, Baumann and Michalicka improved to 3-0 in doubles as they defeated Hagan and Shao in an extremely close 9-8 win. Rassow-Kantor and Muskievicz paired up to take on Rutherford and Schwerin. The Badger duo played a tough match at the No. 2 spot, but pulled out the 8-7 win. Playing at the No. 3 position, Marrack and Dierberger were teamed up to face Medan and Drake Kakar. Marrak and Dierberger used their strong play to defeat the Marquette pair 8-5.
The Badgers will travel to the University of Virginia on Friday, as the team competes in the ITA Midwest Regional Team Championships all weekend. Check back to UWBadgers.com for updates throughout the weekend.
