Bagnoles-de-l'Orne, France - Former Badger Moritz Baumann captured his first professional singles title this weekend by winning the France F1 Futures Tournament in Bagnoles-de-l'Orne, France. The win will earn Baumann, who is currently No. 782, a new career high ranking when the next ATP rankings come out.

Baumann entered the tournament unseeded against France's Jerome Inzerillo. Inzerillo, the No. 583 ranked player, didn't have enough to defeat Baumann who won the match, 6-4,6-3.

In the second round Baumann faced off against Laurent Rochette of France, the tournament's No. 1 seed and No. 337 ranked player. The first set went into a tiebreak and Baumann was able to win the big points to close out the tiebreaker, 7-5, capturing the match's momentum. Baumann's strong play at the end of the first set rolled over into the second set where Baumann made quick work, winning 6-2.

The former Badger continued his strong play in the first set of his quarterfinal match against Niels Desein winning the first set 6-3, but a strong second set by Desein, 3-6, pushed the match into a deciding third set. Baumann rallied back in the third and pushed the match into a tiebreaker which he won, 7-4.

Baumann appeared to be in route to an easy victory against Jules Marie of France in the semifinals when he won the first set, 6-1. The Frenchman fought back to win the second in a tiebreaker, 7-2, but when Baumann regained his stroke in the third set he proved to be too much for Marie, and moved onto the finals with a 6-4 victory in the third.

The win put Baumann into the first professional final of his young career, and the former Badger proved he was big enough for the moment by rallying back from a set down, 2-6, against Alexandre Penaud to win the second set, 7-6 (7-4) and the third 6-4.

"It's a great accomplishment for a former Badger," head coach Greg Van Emburgh said. "To now have two of our recently graduated players [Marek Michalicka] go on and win professional tournaments really says a lot about our program and the direction we are headed."
