The Wisconsin mens tennis team defeated Northern Illinois in Fridays dual season opener at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium, with a score of 5-2. The Badgers won all three doubles matches and took four of six singles matches.
Leading the way for UW in doubles action were senior co-captain David Hippee and junior Alex Kasarov. Wisconsins top-seeded duo defeated the Huskies top pair, Juan-Pablo Barriga and Erick Martinez, 8-6. Hippee and Kasarov are also currently the eighth ranked doubles team in the country.
In other doubles face-offs, the number two seeded team, sophomore Alex Conti and senior co-captain Scott Green upped NIUs Willy Gali and Aaron Forsberg 8-3, while Wisconsins sophomore Ward Bortz and freshman Lachezar Kasarov took down Jack Komar and Stephan Guntly 8-4.
In singles play, Hippee defeated Martinez 7-6 (10), 6-1, while Green defeated Forsberg 6-4, 6-0. Also scoring for Wisconsin were Lachezar Kasarov, who fought back to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 against NIUs Guntly, and Bortz by making quick work of Komar winning 6-3, 6-3.
Wisconsins two losses came as UWs top seed, Alex Kasarov fell 5-7, 3-6 to Northern Illinoiss Willy Gali, while Conti dropped to Barriga 6-7 (3), 2-6, 2-6.
The Badgers now 1-0 for the season and will host DePaul on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. First serve is set for 4 p.m. and the match is free and open to the public.
