Wikberg's Big Ten Singles run ends in semifinals

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. -- The Wisconsin men's tennis team completed its fall season on Sunday at the Big Ten Singles tournament in West Lafayette, Ind. 

Sophomore Oskar Wikberg delivered the stand out performance of the weekend for UW, advancing to the semifinals in the singles bracket. Wikberg's run ended with a loss to Michigan State's John Patrick Mullane on Sunday, with a final score of 6-4, 6-0.

Freshman Zordani was the other Badger who saw action on Sunday, defeating Michael Sellitto of Indiana to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles consolation bracket, with a final decision of 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. Zordani's streak would come to end in the quarters with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Indiana's Elliot Yee.

The Badgers will resume play with the start of the regular season on Jan. 25th in Los Angeles, Calif. as they take on UCLA in their first action of 2014.

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. -- In their second day of play at the 2013 Big Ten Singles Championsihp, the Badgers earned four wins in singles action. Sophomore Oskar Wikberg advanced to the Quaterfinals, which will be played on Sunday.

Four Badgers were alive heading into action Saturday, but only Wikberg was left standing after a pair of impressive wins. In his first match, Wikberg defeated Indiana's Matthew McCoy by a final score of 6-3, 6-2. In the round of 16, he went on to claim his second victory of the day against Matt Hagan of Iowa, with a final decision of 6-2, 6-3.

Wikberg will face Michigan State's John Patrick Mullane on Sunday morning in the quarterfinals.

Senior Petr Satral claimed a victory in his first match of the day, defeating Harry Jadun of Michigan State, with a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). He advanced to the round of 16 before falling to Alex Buzzi of Michigan, unable to come back from a first set tie-breaker loss, with a final decision of 7-6 (8), 6-4.

Freshman Elliott Sprecher faced No. 3 seeded Szymon Tataczyk of Purdue, falling short by a final score of 6-2, 6-2. Wisconsin's other freshman, John Zordani fell to Indiana's Dimitrjie Tasic, with a final decision of 6-1, 6-2.

Sophomore Jakhongir Jalalov fell to Iowa's Janus Dierckx, with a final score of 6-4, 7-5.

Zordani earned a win in the singles consolation bracket, defeating Charlie Shin of Nebraska in two sets, with a final score of 6-4, 6-4 and will face Indiana's Michael Sellitto in the fourth round of the consolation bracket on Sunday morning.

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. -- The Wisconsin men's tennis team had an impressive opening day at the Big Ten Singles Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind. Two of three Badgers doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals, while four of six singles players advanced to the round of 32, which will be played Saturday morning.

Freshmen Elliott Sprecher and John Zordani, as well as sophomores Oskar Wikberg and Jakhongir Jalalov each advanced to the next round of play as well.  

Sprecher defeated Julian Childers of Illinois by default and will face No. 3 seeded Szymon Tatarczyk of Purdue Saturday morning. Zordani defeated Andres Estenssoro of Iowa, with a final score of 6-2, 6-2 and will face Indiana's Dimitrijie Tasic on Saturday morning. Wikberg claimed a victory against Ford Zitsch of Nebraska, with a final score of 6-0, 6-4 and will face Matthew McCoy of Indiana on Saturday morning. Jalalov rallied back from a first set defeat to best Minnesota's Jeremy Lynn, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. He will face Iowa's Jonas Dierckx Saturday morning.

Sophomores Alexander Kokorev and Frederik Strabo fell short of advancing to the next round in two close match ups against Michigan State. Kokorev lost to Brett Forman by a final score of 6-3, 6-4, while Strabo was defeated by Will Davis, with a final decision of, 6-4, 6-3.

Both Kokorev and Strabo will compete in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning. Kokorev will take on Indiana's Daniel Bednzrxzyk, while Strabo will face Nika Dolidze of Penn State.

In doubles action, Wisconsin went 3-0 in first round matches. Kokorev and Satral defeated Mac Roy and Doug Zade of Michigan State by a final score of 8-3 before falling to Marc Herrmann and Beauregard Treyz in their second match, after a tie breaker, resulting in a 8-7 (3) final score.

The freshman duo of Sprecher and Zordani claimed an 8-5 win against Iowa's Andre Estenssoro and Chase Tomlins. In their next match up of the day, they defeated Minnesota's Jeremy Lynn and Tucker Saxon, with a final decision of 8-3. In their quarterfinals appearance, the duo lost a hard fought match against Shaun Bernstein and Kevin Wong of Michigan, with a final score of 8-6. 

Also making a quarterfinals appearance were Jalalov and Wikberg, earning a win in their first match against Penn State's Matt Barry and David Kohan, with a final score of 8-6. They went on to defeat Brandon Videtich and Bradford Zitsch of Neraska, 8-6, before falling to Michigan State's Harry Jadun and Gijs Linders in the quarterfinals, with a final score of 8-6.
