SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Wisconsin men’s tennis team finished up singles and doubles play at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championship on Sunday afternoon. Senior Marek Michalicka led the Badgers, advancing to the third round in the singles main draw and making it to the third round of the doubles draw paired with freshman Petr Satral.

Michalicka began singles play with an early win over Michigan’s Justin Rossi. He defeated the Wolverine in two quick sets, 6-3, 6-2. The win took Michalicka to a Saturday morning matchup where he defeated Michigan State’s Denis Bogatov, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the third round of play.

Michalicka faced off against Ohio State’s Balazs Novak in a close match on Saturday afternoon. Despite a tight first set, Novak claimed the 7-5 win. With the momentum on the Buckeye’s side, Novak was able to earn a 6-2 second set win to end Michalicka’s singles run in the championship.

Sophomore Ricardo Martin faced off against Ohio State’s Chase Buchanan to start off play, but Buchanan earned the two set win over Martin, 6-3, 6-4.

Sophomore Billy Bertha matched up against Notre Dame’s Tyler Davis for the first round of play. Davis earned a quick 6-2 win over the Badger, but Bertha was able to make the second set closer. Davis eventually earned the second set win over Bertha, 6-4, to end Bertha’s run in singles play.

Satral rounded singles play off for the Badgers taking on Northwestern’s Joshua Graves in the first round. The Wildcat junior proved to be too much for Satral as the Badger fell, 6-2, 6-2.

Redshirt freshman Alexander Teppert and freshman Alex Robles finished their play in the singles qualifying draw Friday.

The Badgers found better success in doubles play with first round wins from all three Wisconsin pairs.

Bertha and Martin advanced to the second round after Western Michigan’s duo withdrew from the match. Bertha and Martin then defeated Notre Dame’s Johnson and Keeton in a close, 8-6 match in the second round of the tournament. The win carried Bertha and Martin to the third round of doubles play where they took on Illinois’ duo of Nevolo and Souza. The Wisconsin pair was not able to keep on their momentum as they fell, 8-3, to finish their doubles play.

Robles and Teppert also found early success in doubles action as the pair took on Illinois’ Souza and Abdelnour in the first round. The Badger duo earned the 8-4 win to take them to a second round match against Michigan State’s Hulewicz and Bogatoz. Robles and Teppert fell to the Wolverine duo, 8-3.

In the final doubles match up for Wisconsin, Michalicka and Satral grabbed an early win over Cleveland State’s Richardson and Lied. The win took Michalicka and Satral to a match against Detroit’s Nunez and Cheung, where they earned an easy 8-2 win. The Badger duo finished play in the third round, falling to Illinois State’s Reichelt and Pelaez in an 8-4 match.

Wisconsin heads to the Big Ten Fall Singles Championship this weekend, slated for Oct. 29-Nov. 1 in East Lansing, Mich. The team then wraps up the fall season with the USTA/ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 4-7 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
