Evanston, ILL – Wisconsin had five singles players and two doubles teams compete at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston Ill., Oct. 21-23.

Both of the Badgers young doubles teams reached the semifinal of the tournament and have shown a lot of growth throughout the fall season.

Sophomores Alex Robles and Alexander Teppert paired together to defeat Muddappa Appanervanda and Willi Peter of Illinois State in the first round, 8-5. Freshmen Austin Akers and Jack Larsen also won their first round match 8-5 against in state rivals Jonathan Schwerin and Logon Collins from Marquette.

In the quarterfinals Robles and Teppert made easy work of Nadin Indre and Aaron Wong of Western Michigan by defeating them, 8-2. Akers and Larsen had a much more difficult time against Minnesota’s Michael Sicora and Eric Frueh. The two forced the match into a tiebreaker and then won the tiebreaker, 9-7, closing out the match 9-8.

Teppert and Robles were unable to advance to the finals after losing to Nikhil Jayashankar and Alberto Zanotti of Northwestern, 8-6. Akers and Larsen also lost in the semis to Ross Guignon and Tim Kopinski of Illinois, 8-2.

In singles sophomore Fredrik Ask recorded the best results by posting a 2-1 record for the weekend in the Flight A Singles Bracket. Ask lost his first round match to Jusso Ojanen of Illinois State 6-4, 7-5.

Ask then rebounded in his next match against Matija Palinic of DePaul. Ask won the first set 6-4, then struggled to put Palinic away as he lost the set 6-7, but was able to close the match out in the third by winning the match tiebreaker 10-6.

In his next round of consolation Ask dominated Garret Dunn of Iowa 6-1, 6-2.

The strong performances by all five Badgers show the improvements all of these underclassmen have made during the fall season.

The Badgers will compete next at the Big Ten Singles Tournament in Iowa City from Oct. 29-31.
