Badgers conclude play at the ITA Midwest Regionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Badgers ended their run in main draw brackets at the ITA Midwest regional in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday after losses in both singles and doubles play. The duo of senior Petr Satral and sophomore Alexander Kokorev made Wisconsin’s deepest run, advancing to the third round of the doubles draw before bowing out.

After a sweep for all of the Badgers teams in the first round of the main doubles draw, Satral and Kokorev were UW’s only duo to make it out of the second round, breezing past Western Michigan’s Ruben Greiner and Michael Treis, 8-1. Their run would come to and end one round later, dropping an 8-5 decision to the 7-seeded team of Ohio State’s Hunter Callahan and Chris Diaz.

Frederik Strabo and John Zordani battled tough against No. 3-seeded Filip Dzanko and David Vieyra of DePaul, before ultimately falling, 8-6, in round two.

Elliott Sprecher and Jakhongir Jalalov suffered a similar second-round fate, taking an 8-5 bump to the No. 11 seed team of Sam Shropshire and Mihir Kumar of Northwestern.

After advancing to the second round of the main singles draw with a (6-4, 6-1) victory over Michael Tenzer of Green Bay on Friday, 13th-seeded Satral was unable to keep his momentum up as he fell to Josh Hager of Notre Dame on Saturday, 6-2, 6-2.

Kokorev faced similar struggles after claiming a first round main singles draw match over Michael Zhu of Michigan, coming back after a first set deficit to win the match with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 final decision.  His second round match resulted in a loss to No. 5 seed Quentin Monaghan of Notre Dame by a score of, 6-4, 6-3.

In the consolation singles bracket, sophomore Jakhongir Jalalov stayed alive defeating Howard Scott of Green Bay, with a final score of 7-6, 7-5. Sprecher fell 6-3, 6-3 to Toledo’s Stjepan Sisko.

Wisconsin will play in one final tournament this fall, heading to West Lafayette, Ind. on Nov. 1-3 for the Big Ten Singles Tournament.


Badgers post 3-0 start to doubles action

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wisconsin men's tennis team continued its strong showing in the ITA Regionals Tournament Friday, earning a pair of Main Draw singles wins as well as a 3-0 start to doubles play.

Prior to action in the main draw, freshman John Zordani fell to Frederic Cadieux of Northern Illinois, 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the Qualifier Singles bracket.

Earning wins in the first round of the Singles Draw were senior Petr Satral, who defeated Michael Tenzer of Green Bay, 6-4, 6-1, as well as sophomore Alexander Kokorev who claimed a victory after dropping the first set against Michigan's Michael Zhu. Kokorev rallied back to claim a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 decision.

Freshman Elliott Sprecher fell to Nadin Indre of Western Michigan after a hard fought three set battle, with a final score of 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2.

In doubles action, the Badgers raced out to a perfect start, sweeping their three first-round match. The pairing of Sprecher and Jalalov defeated NIU's Frederic Cadieux and Simon Formont, by a final score of 8-5. Strabo and Zordani teamed up to earn a win against Sebastian Hagn and Dawoud Kabli of Youngstown State, with a final score of 8-5.  

Earning the Badgers third win of the day in doubles were Satral and Kokorev who dominated Maurizio Feoli and Carl Hedstrom of Illinois-Chicago, with a decisive 8-2 victory.

Strabo, Zordani advance in opening play at ITA Regionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Badgers started off the 2013 ITA Midwest Regional Tournament strong as freshman John Zordani won a pair of matches to advance in the Qualifier Singles bracket. Sophomore Frederik Strabo won his first match of the tournament but was upended in round two.

Zordani came from behind in his match against Cleveland State's Joe Van Meter, fighting back for a 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 win. In round two, Zordani had more late magic, bouncing back from a 3-6 loss in the first set to post 6-3, 6-1 wins and claim victory over IPFW's Daniel Kang.

Zordani will face continue action Friday morning.

In his opening-round match, Strabo defeated Matt Hamilton of Western Michigan in straight sets with a final score of 6-1, 6-4. However, after taking the first set in round two from Illinois State's Muddappa Appanervanda, the sophomore was unable to keep the momentum going falling 6-3, 6-1 in the final two frames.

The first rounds of the main singles bracket and doubles action are also scheduled to begin on Friday. 

Senior Petr Satral is seeded No. 13 in singles play and will face Tenzer of Green Bay. Sophomore Alexander Kokorev will take on Zhu of Michigan on Friday as well. 

In doubles action, the pairing of Satral and Kokorev are seeded No. 12 and will face Feoli and Hedstrom of UIC. The team of freshman Elliott Sprecher and sophomore Jakhongir Jalalov will take on Cadieux and Formont of NIU. Finally, Strabo and Zordani will face Hagn and Kabli of YSU. 

Wisconsin looks to continue its successful start to tournament on Friday. Play will begin at 8 a.m. Fans can follow along on the tournament central page.
