COLUMBUS, Ohio - Juniors Billy Bertha and Alexander Kostanov led the Badgers at the ITA Midwest regional last weekend by reaching the round of 16 in the doubles main draw.

Seeded eighth, Bertha and Kostanov played Valparaiso’s Chris Baum and Adam Whitmer in the first round and won the match, 8-4. They followed up their strong performance by dominating Bruno Abdelnour and Ross Guignon of Illinois, 8-1.

In the round of 16 Bertha and Kostanov played the nine seed, Notre Dame’s Case Watt and Greg Andrews. Wisconsin lost the match 9-7. Bertha and Kostanov’s strong results from the weekend have now pushed their doubles record to 6-2, showing how quickly the two have been able to develop chemistry this fall.

Fredrik Ask and Alex Robles also won a round in the doubles main draw by defeating Nolan Marks and Ben Shklyar of Cleveland State in the first round, 8-4.

The two were eliminated in the second round by the seven seed, Northwestern’s Josh Graves and Spencer Wolf, 8-5.

In the first round of singles qualifying Jack Larsen was the only Badger to earn a victory when he defeated Max Phillips of Northern Illinois, 6-3, 6-1. In the second round Larsen lost a close, three-set match to Illinois State’s Jusso Ojanen, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-1.

Wisconsin was unable to advance any of its players in the first round of singles play in the main draw, but Kostanov and sophomores Petr Satral and Alex Robles were all able to bounce back and earn consolation match victories.

The ITA Midwest Regional proved to be a great opportunity for Wisconsin to gain experience by playing over 20 matches total throughout the weekend. The Badgers compete next Oct. 21-23 at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
