CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A trio of Badgers competed in the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational this weekend. Senior Marek Michalicka and sophomores Billy Bertha and Ricardo Martin joined the tournament entry list that included 28 ranked players, 11 of whom competed in the 2010 NCAA Singles Championship. 

The invitational consisted of four "A" singles draws, each consisting of 16 players, and one "B" flight, as well as four "A" doubles draws of eight teams.

Bertha was placed in the A-1 singles bracket where he was matched up with North Carolina State's Jamie Pulgar to start off the invitational. Bertha fell in his first match to NCSU's No. 44-ranked Pulgar, 6-1, 6-4, but came back on Saturday morning to defeat Northwestern's Joshua Graves, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Graves is currently ranked at No. 86. 

Bertha then went to an afternoon match where he took on ETSU's Charles Bottoni. The sophomore defeated the No. 82-ranked player with a 7-5 first set and finished off with a 6-3 second set. The win took Bertha to the consolation match on Sunday afternoon where he faced the No. 1-ranked player, Tennessee's John-Patrick Smith. Bertha ended up falling to Smith in a close first set, 6-4, and then 6-2 in the second set.

Martin competed in the A-3 singes bracket this weekend where he started off play against UNC's Jose Hernandez. No. 30 Hernandez came out on top in the 6-1, 6-2 match. The loss put Martin in the consolation bracket for Saturday's play.

Martin then took on No. 97 Sander Gille from ETSU on Saturday morning. After a close first set, Gille defeated the Wisconsin sophomore, 7-5, 6-4. The loss brought Martin to the 13th place bracket where he faced Bing's Arnav Jain, and easily defeated Jain, 6-4, 6-1.

Wisconsin's lone senior Michalicka rounded out the invitational list for the Badgers, competing in the A-4 singles bracket. The No. 19-ranked Michalicka took on Virginia's Justin Shane to start off his weekend play. Shane easily took the first set, 6-1, but Michalicka fought back winning the second set 7-5. Shane won the close third set, 6-4, to put Michalicka in the consolation matches. 

Michalicka easily defeated his next opponent, UNC's Taylor Meyer, 6-3, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon, taking him to an evening match against Virginia's Philippee Oudshoorn. Michalicka took down Oudshoorn in two sets winning 6-4, 6-4. Michalicka continued on his momentum on Sunday afternoon easily defeating ETSU's No. 93 Grega Teraz, 6-4, 6-3, to finish off a strong weekend.

Martin and Bertha also competed in doubles play during the tournament, where they were placed in the A-3 bracket. The duo defeated Virginia's Dell'Orto and Fang in a close first match, 9-8, but fell to Wake Forest's pair of Wolfe and Kreyman, 8-0.

Michalicka and Bertha then paired up in the third-place match where they fell to Oklahoma's Mihav and Beleleu, 8-6, to finish off doubles play.

The Badgers have a break in their fall play until October 7 when Michalicka will compete in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The senior was selected to compete in the event for the second-straight year.
