EAST LANSING, Mich. – In its first conference road trip of the season, the Wisconsin men’s tennis team split results against two ranked foes in Michigan. The Badgers fell to No. 22 Michigan on Saturday but came back to defeat No. 53 Michigan State on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Wolverines grabbed an early 2-0 lead after earning two of the three doubles matches and an early singles win in the No. 6 slot.

Petr Satral fought back for the Badgers defeating Michigan’s Barrett Franks 6-2, 6-2, to tighten the score at 2-1. The win wasn’t enough to spark momentum with the team as Michigan came back with wins in the Nos. 5, 2, and 3 slots to clinch the win.

Despite the match decision, Marek Michalicka came back from a third set super-tiebreak deficit to earn the match win over No. 21 Evan King. Michalicka found himself down 8-3 but won the next seven points to win the match.

The Badgers started Sunday’s match on a different note taking the doubles point with wins from the No. 78-ranked duo of Michalicka and Billy Bertha in the No. 1 spot and the freshman pairing of Rod Carey and Fredrik Ask in the No. 3 spot.

The Spartans fought back earning the first three singles wins in the Nos. 4, 3, and 6 slots to bring the score to 3-1, with MSU in the lead.

Wisconsin didn’t back down though, coming back with the final three match wins to earn the 4-3 match victory.

Senior captain Michalicka easily defeated Denis Bogatov in the No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-3, while Bertha followed suite in the No. 2 spot with a three-set match win, 0-6, 6-0, 6-4.

The match decision came down to the No. 5 position as Ask defeated MSU’s John Stratton, 6-0, 6-3, for the 4-3 Badger win.

Sunday’s win brings Wisconsin’s record to 8-9 on the season and 2-2 in Big Ten play.

The Badgers will return home next week kicking off a four-match homestand against Purdue and Indiana. Wisconsin will look for two upsets facing the No. 60th-ranked Boilermakers on Friday at 4 p.m. and the No. 29th-ranked Hoosiers on Sunday at noon.
