MADISON, Wis. -- Despite several close matches and overall strong play, No. 49 Wisconsin fell to No. 47 Minnesota on Saturday in the Big Ten opener at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Badgers (6-4, 0-1) started the day off with a victory at No. 2 doubles as freshman John Zordani and Alexander Kokorev claimed an 8-5 victory over Leandro Toledo and Eric Frueh.
However, UW was unable to secure the doubles point when senior Petr Satral and sophomore Jakhongir Jalalov fell, 8-4, to No. 22 Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment at the No. 1 spot.
Freshman Elliott Sprecher and sophomore Oskar Wikberg also came up short against Juan Pablo Ramirez and Franz Sydow, with a final score of 8-5.
In singles action, Sprecher kept his undefeated season alive, coming back from a first set loss to defeat Jeremy Lynn, with a final score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Wikberg fell 6-4, 6-4 in a hard fought match to No. 84 Leandro Toledo at the No. 1 spot.
Kokorev couldn’t hold onto his lead against Ruben Weber after winning the first set, and losing a second set tiebreaker, the match ended with a final decision of 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-1.
At the No. 3 spot, Satral fell to Jack Hamburg after battling back steal the second set, with a final score of 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.
Mathieu Froment defeated Jalalov, with a final result of 6-3, 6-3.
Zordani netted UW’s second singles win of the day, coming back to claim a victory over Eric Frueh, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Up next, the Badgers will return home for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 8, facing Green Bay at noon and Western Illinois at 3 p.m. at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
