MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men’s tennis team (2-3) opened a three-match homestand on Tuesday night playing host to No. 25 Notre Dame. Despite a hard fought battle, the No. 39 Badgers were not able to record their first upset falling to the Irish in a 6-1 match.

The No. 2 doubles match was the first to finish as Fredrik Ask and Petr Satral took on Notre Dame’s Niall Fitzgerald and Spencer Talmadge. The Wisconsin duo fell early in their first doubles pairing in an 8-3 loss.

Marek Michalicka and Billy Bertha fought back for the Badgers in the No. 1 doubles spot against No. 47th duo of Stephen Havens and Tyler Davis. The Wisconsin pair pulled ahead to an early 6-3 lead, but the Irish were not going to give up that easily bringing the score their deficit to 6-5. Michalicka and Bertha pushed ahead for the 8-5 win.

The win brought the duo’s record to 5-0 on the season, and marked their first win against a ranked opponent.

In the No. 3 doubles match, Ricardo Martin and Rodney Carey took on Notre Dame’s Casey Watt and Greg Andrews. Despite an even match, the Irish pair came out on top, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point for Notre Dame.

In singles competition, Carey found Wisconsin’s first loss of the day in the No. 6 position falling in a 6-3, 7-5 match. At the No. 1 position, senior captain Michalicka downed his opponent, 6-1, 7-5. The win brought the score to 2-1 as Notre Dame held the slight edge.

Satral started at the No. 4 position where he battled Andrews to a close two-set match. Satral fell 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

In the No. 3 slot Billy Bertha fell in his first set, 6-4, to the Fighting Irish’s Stahl, but came back to take the match to a third set. Despite his efforts, Bertha fell 6-2 in the third set as Notre Dame took the 4-1 match win.

Rounding out the match, Ricardo Martin fell to No. 71 Havens in the No. 2 singles slot in a three-set match (6-3, 5-7, 6-2), while Fredrik Ask retired in his third set against Notre Dame’s Keeton.

The Badgers open Big Ten Conference play this weekend playing host to No. 27 Minnesota on Sunday. Match time is set for 12 p.m. (CT).
