MADISON, Wis. – Despite putting up a fight, No. 66 Wisconsin was unable to gain any momentum Saturday in the season opener, falling to No. 2 UCLA, 5-0 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
In doubles action, the freshmen duo of John Zordani and Ellott Sprecher fell to Gage Brymer and Dennis Mkrtchian by a final score of 6-2. The sophomore team of Johnnie Jalalov and Oskar Wikberg were defeated by Joeseph DiGiulio and Clay Thompson, with a final decision of 6-2.
Senior Petr Satral and sophomore Alexander Kokorev teamed up for a hard fought match-up against No. 10 Marcos Giron and Mackenzie McDonald that ended at 3-3 and went unfinished.
In singles action, Satral took on the nation’s No. 1-ranked player in Clay Thompson, and put up a fight in the second set, before suffering a 6-1, 6-4 defeat. Wikberg faced No. 62 Mackenzie McDonald, falling in a close second set, with a final decision of 6-2, 6-5 (4). Kokorev was defeated by No. 120 Gage Bymer, 6-4, 6-0.
Jalalov battled back in the second set against Dennis Mkrtchian, but the match went unfinished, with the score sitting at 6-2, 5-5. Junior Michael Sinha made his debut for Wisconsin against Joeseph Di Giulio, falling by a final mark of 6-4, 6-2. Sprecher match with Ryoto Tachi was halted with the UW freshman trailing, 6-3 5-3.
The Badgers will look to even their record on the young season when they take on No. 60 Nebraska Sunday at noon (CT) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
