MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's tennis team opened its 2011 season on a strong note playing host to Butler and UW-Whitewater this Saturday. The No. 29th-ranked Badgers shutout both opponents in two 7-0 wins for a spotless debut.

The Badgers got things started right away against the Bulldogs winning all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 going into singles competition.

Sophomore Billy Bertha grabbed the first win in the No. 2 singles spot with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Butler's Bryce Warren.

Marek Michalicka followed suite in the No. 1 spot with a quick 6-1 first set win. BU's Bayliss broke serve to start the second set, 1-0, but the Badger captain answered back to take a 6-2 win.

With a 3-0 advantage, Wisconsin freshman Rodney Carey earned a first set win, 6-2, over Lenz Theodor in the No. 6 slot. Theodor fought back for a close second set, but Carey stayed strong for a 6-4 win in his debut match as a Badger.

Carey's win gave UW the 4-0 match win.

Alex Robles, Ricardo Martin, and Petr Satral finished off the morning match against Butler with wins in the Nos. 5, 4, and 3 spots, respectively, for Wisconsin's 7-0 shutout win over the Bulldogs.

Wisconsin carried its momentum into the afternoon match against UW-Whitewater sweeping the doubles competition to take the 1-0 lead.

The young duo of Martin and Carey earned the first doubles win in the No. 3 slot for an 8-3 victory over UW-W's Miller and Scanlan.

Despite close starts in the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches, both Wisconsin pairs pulled ahead to keep UW undefeated on the day.

The No. 29-ranked Badgers then took over in singles play dominating all six singles spots against the Warhawks for the 7-0 match win and an impressive 2-0 start to the season.

Wisconsin will hit the road next weekend traveling to Lexington, Ky. for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. UW will face Wake Forest on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 9 a.m. and either Kentucky or Boise State on Sunday, Jan. 30., match time TBA.
