Joe Bates, a native of Madison, Wis., begins his fifth year as an assistant coach for the UW men's tennis team in 2013-14.

The Madison native has been instrumental in the Badgers' success on the court. In 2010, Bates helped the Badgers reach the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Team Tournament for the first time in school history. Wisconsin finished the 2010 season ranked No. 23, the highest ranking in program history.

Bates, a three-year letterwinner at Wake Forest University, graduated in 2006. Among his achievements at Wake Forest, Bates attained a team national ranking of No. 13 and made the Round of 32 in three team NCAA tournament appearances. Not only was Bates an exceptional athlete, but he was also recognized for his efforts in the classroom, he was named to the Dean's List and ACC Academic Honor Roll three years.

Upon graduation, Bates competed on the Pro Tour from 2006-09 where he achieved a ATP World Doubles ranking, reached the semi-finals in doubles in Futures events in Florida and Mexico and played qualifying singles in the RCA Championships - an ATP 250 Tour Event - in Indianapolis, Ind. Bates also spent one season as No. 1 singles for Danderyds Tennis Club in Stockholm, Sweden.

Bates was a four-sport athlete in high school which included basketball, volleyball, soccer and tennis. An all-state high school tennis player, Bates was a four-time qualifier for the Wisconsin State Singles Tournament and made two finals appearances. He finished his junior career ranked no. 1 in Wisconsin in Boys 18 Singles, earning the Wisconsin Frank Parker Award for tennis in 2001, the most prestigious award that a junior player can win in Wisconsin.
