Joe Bates, a native of Madison, Wis., completed his second year as an assistant coach for the UW men's tennis team in 2011-12 after serving as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2009-10 campaign.

Bates a three-year letterwinner at Wake Forest University graduated in 2006. Among his achievements at Wake Forest, Bates attained a team national ranking of No. 13 and made the round of 32 in three team NCAA Tournament appearances.

Bates was an All-State high school tennis player in Wisconsin and a four-time qualifier for the Wisconsin State Singles Tournament, where he had two finals appearances. He finished his junior career ranked no. 1 in Wisconsin in Boys 18 Singles. Also, as a junior player he won the Wisconsin Frank Parker Award for tennis in 2001, the most prestigious award that a junior player can win in Wisconsin.

Not only was Bates an exceptional athlete, but he was also recognized for his efforts in the classroom, he was named to the Dean's List and ACC Academic Honor Roll for three years while at Wake Forest.

Upon graduation, Bates competed on the Pro Tour and played one season of professional Club Tennis in Stockholm, Sweden. He currently holds an ATP World doubles ranking.
