The No. 17 Wisconsin mens swimming and diving team finishes strong after day one at the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis. The Badgers took three first-place finishes in seven events on the first day of action Friday night.
Senior Adam Mania fronts the Badger men, winning the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.27) as well as the 50-yard freestyle (20.53). Senior Eric Wiesner finished fifth in the 50 free, posting a time of 20.80.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Mania, Wiesner, Tim Liebhold, and Scott Speer opened the meet with a second-place finish (1:21.72). The Badgers B squad of Chris Scheuber, Tom Molzahn, Tommy Gregory, and Dan Rowlands finished ninth at 1:25.11.
Molzahn picked up a fourth-place finish for the Badgers at 4:34.11 in the 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Mike Swanson finished seventh with a time of 4:37.15.
Gregory, Will Weeks, Nick Bennett, and Speer ended the meet with a strong finish for Wisconsin, taking first place in the 400-yard medley relay (3:19.34)
Leading the Badger men on the 3-meter board prelims are brothers Justin and Josh Bonner, finishing 12th (377.80) and 18th (196.10), respectively.
The five Division I participants at the Minnesota Invitational (Minnesota, Purdue, Iowa, Wisconsin and North Dakota) are the only teams competing in the finals. South Dakota State, St. Cloud State, Carleton College, Gustavus Adolphus and St. Olaf, only competed in prelims.
The Badgers continue action at the Minnesota Invite Saturday. Prelims are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., while the finals begin again at 6 p.m.
