MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin men's swimmer Michael Weiss, women's hockey player Brianna Decker and men's basketball player Jared Berggren have been named UW Student-Athletes of the Month for November.

Each month, the UW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) selects its "Student-Athletes of the Month." These student-athletes are nominated by their coaches and academic advisors based on the following criteria:

The student-athletes must:
• Be academically eligible and in good academic standing
• Have obtained an outstanding achievement or recognition in academics
• Make a significant contribution to their respective team
• Be actively engaged in community service

SAAC members then vote on the winners at the first SAAC meeting of each month. The goal is to have each sport represented throughout the year. At the end of the year, all of the "Student-Athletes of the Month" become the nominations for the male and female Student-Athlete of the Year awards, which is awarded at the Buckinghams.

Weiss has not lost an individual event yet this season, claiming the top spot in all 13 races through seven duals. The senior has already claimed a `B' qualifying time for the NCAA championships in the 400-yard individual medley.

The Reno, Nev., native was chosen to represent USA Swimming at the Short Course World Championships in Turkey in December and will make the trip with head coach Whitney L. Hite, who will serve as a coach for the team.

Weiss has been an active member of the community this year and last, lending a helping hand in the last two Madison Ironman events, participating in various food drives and spending the entire day helping with the Special Olympics swim meet.

A native of Dousman, Wis., Decker is a human development family studies major. She led the nation in goal scoring last year and won the 2012 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, given annually to the best women's collegiate hockey player. Decker is a two-time All-American and served as a SAAC representative for the women's hockey team in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.

Currently, Decker leads the Badgers with 12 goals and seven assists through 12 games this season. Decker scored the Badgers' first goal in LaBahn Arena on Oct. 21. She is also tied for first in the nation with three game-winning goals.

The unquestioned leader and captain of the men's basketball team, Berggren has been voted as the team representative for the SAAC in each of the last two seasons. Berggren, who is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and five-time Dean's List honoree, carries a 3.33 GPA and will graduate in May 2013 with personal finance degree and a certificate from the prestigious School of Business.

Berggren was named honorable mention All-Big Ten last season as a junior. He was third on the Badgers in both points (10.5) and rebounds (4.9) while leading the team with 60 blocks in 2011-12. He led the Big Ten in blocks as a junior (1.9 avg. during Big Ten play) and increased his scoring average by 8.1 points from 2010-11 to 2011-12, the sixth-biggest improvement in the Big Ten.
