MADISON, Wis. - The Badger men's swimming team took home its first win of the season after splitting the weekend with Arizona and Arizona State. The men dropped Friday's contest with Arizona, 166-93, before posting a 152-126 victory over the Sun Devils on Saturday. The women's team dropped both contests against Arizona and Arizona State by scores of 151.5-92.5 and 174-104, respectively.
On Friday, Wisconsin found success early against Arizona with senior Danielle Beckwith's first place finish in the 1000-yard free. Beckwith out-swam her opponents and touched the wall first in 10:08.67.
Badger senior Ashley Wanland triumphed in both of her individual events. After posting her first `B' qualifying times of the season last week against Minnesota, Wanland earned a NCAA B qualifying time in each event with a time of 1:01.23 in the 100 breast and a time of 2:14.21 in the 200 breast.
In the men's 200 free, junior Michael Weiss and senior Jeff Morris finished consecutively in a one-two punch for Wisconsin. Weiss reached the wall first in 1:40.40, followed by fellow Badger Jeff Morris in 1:42.77. Weiss posted another first place finish for Wisconsin in the 500 free, with a time of 4:36.89. Wisconsin junior Austin Cox came in second in 4:43.21.
Wisconsin junior Dan Lester topped his competition in the 200 fly, touching the final wall in 1:52.15. Badger senior Monika Stitski finished victorious in the 400 IM. With a time of 4:24.36, she posted the season's Big Ten sixth-best finish in the event.
Following up on Saturday, Wisconsin opened the meet against Arizona State with the top finish in the men's 400 medley relay. Wisconsin juniors Dan Lester, Garrett Mulchrone, and Michael Weiss joined senior Wes Lagerhausen on the `A' relay and beat their competition with a time of 3:23.34, which was also the Big Ten's second-best time of the season.
After the winning relay, Weiss continued to stand out against ASU, placing first in all of his individual events. In the 200 free, Weiss touched the wall in 1:41.15 with Badger senior Jeff Morris close behind with a time of 1:42.81 for second. Weiss earned his next victory in the 500 free, finishing in 4:36.82.
In the 200 IM, Weiss claimed first with the season's fifth-best Big Ten time, reaching the wall in 1:51.84. Lester took second with the top-eighth Big Ten finish in the event, just .29 seconds behind Weiss. Fellow Badger junior Brandon O'Donnell came in third.
Many other Badgers swam on to trounce the competition in their individual events against the Sun Devils.
Lester came out on top in his other events, finishing with a time of 49.64 in the 100 fly, and 1:52.18 in the 200 fly.
Mulchrone owned the backstroke and achieved first-place finishes in the 100 and 200. Mulchrone reached the wall in 51.46 in the 100 back and 1:52.76 in the 200.
Badger sophomore Tariq Miller sustained Wisconsin's winning trend in the 100 and 200 breast. Miller out-paced the other swimmers and finished the 100 breast in 58.94. In the 200 breast, Miller took first again, finishing in 2:09.63.
For the women's team on Saturday, Wisconsin junior Ashley Wanland remained undefeated in her individual events. She claimed first in the 100 and 200 breast with a time of 1:01.19 and 2:14.55, both of which were NCAA B qualifying times.
In the 50 free, Badger freshman Ivy Martin touched the wall first in 23.59, only .04 seconds before her sister, junior Ruby Martin, to give Wisconsin a Martin one-two finish in the event.
Junior Laura Miller came within .03 seconds of first place in the 100 free, finishing in 51.62.
The Badgers return to competition on Friday as they head to Evanston, Ill., for a Big Ten dual against Northwestern.
