Sept. 2, 2012

MADISON, Wis. – Former Badger Ashley Wanland, along with 2012 All-American Michael Weiss, were named to the United States’ National Team roster, USA Swimming announced on Saturday.

Wanland, who finished her senior campaign this past season, will compete in the 100 meter breaststroke for Team USA. Wanland garnered a pair of Big Ten championships in her final collegiate conference race, winning the 100 breast (59.17) and the 200 medley relay (1:37.34). She also earned All-American honorable mention honors following her performance in the 400 medley relay (3:34.78) at the NCAA championships.

Following a strong showing at the 2012 U.S. Open in Indianapolis, where he won the 400 IM (4:15.79) and recorded the 23rd-fastest time in the world, Weiss was named to the United States’ roster, as well as the 2013 U.S. World University Games roster. Weiss is entering his senior campaign this fall and will compete for the U.S. in the 400 IM, an event that has been strong for the U.S. in recent years and includes U.S. teammates Ryan Lochte and the recently-retired Michael Phelps.

The 2012-2013 USA Swimming National Team features the top six swimmers in each event from the combined results of the U.S. Olympic Trials, the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and the 2012 U.S. Open in Indianapolis.

Weiss will compete at the 2013 World University Games, which is set to begin July 6, 2013, in Kazan, Russia.
