MADISON, Wis. -- A total of 29 Badgers are set to compete at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational, held at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb., June 8-10.
The meet will serve as a test run for the U.S. Olympic Trials, as the same venue is being used to house the trials two weeks later. Normally used for basketball and ice hockey, CenturyLink Center builds a pool from the ground up on the stadium floor. The temporary competition pool has 10 50-meter lanes and is 2.7 meters deep.
Swimming at the CenturyLink Center will help the Badger swimmers acclimate to the venue for the Olympic Trials. Racing against tough competition at the Omaha Swimvitational, the UW swimmers will have a slight advantage over the competition they will face as they attempt to procure a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
The meet also gives the Badgers a last chance to prepare and fine-tune themselves for both the trials and the U.S. Open later in August.
Heading to the meet will be 10 men and 19 women from the Badgers' 2011-12 squad.
