Adam Mania (Hickman, Neb.) and Tim Liebhold (Chapel Hill, N.C.) both earned honorable mention All-America selections to lead the University of Wisconsin men's swimming team to a 22nd-place standing on the first day of competition at the NCAA championships Thursday at University Aquatic Center.
In the 200-yard IM, Liebhold placed 12th with a time of 1:46.58 while Mania finished 14th with a mark of 1:47.31, as Wisconsins lone representatives in the meet earned eight points for the team. Auburn leads with 172 points.
For finishing in the top 16, Liebhold picked up his second honorable mention All-America award, and Mania took home his ninth.
"It was a good way to start the meet," head coach Eric Hansen said. "All in all, I was real happy today. We hope to continue performing this way throughout the meet, especially since we have some important events tomorrow."
Although both were seeded in the fifth heat of the 200-yard IM in the morning preliminary round, Mania and Liebhold ended up 10th (1:46.14) and 15th (1:46.54), respectively, to make it to the evening session.
The event was the only one for both UW swimmers. Tomorrow, Mania will compete in the 100-yard backstroke, and Liebhold will race in the 400-yard IM.
