Seniors Shine on Day Two of Big Ten Championships

Seniors Adam Mania (Hickman, Neb.) and Tim Liebhold (Chapel Hill, N.C.) paved the way for the University of Wisconsin mens swimming and diving team Friday night at the University Aquatic Center. Mania swam his best time of the year in the 100-yard backstroke in the finals taking second place, while Liebhold grabbed his second A time of the championships in the 400-yard IM.

Both Mania and Liebhold set new UW school records in their individual events. Mania swam the 100-yard back in an NCAA A time of 46.86, and broke his season best that he set earlier in the prelims with a time of 47.00. Liebhold swam his way to an NCAA A time of 3:46.08 and a third-place finish in the 400-yard IM.

We had a mixed bag, Adam (Mania) and Timmy (Liebhold) were great in their individual events, said head coach Eric Hansen. On the other hand the relays didn't do what they should have, and we need to learn from it and improve.

Mania, Liebhold, Tom Molzahn (Barrington, Ill.) and senior Eric Wiesner (Montrose, Colo.) joined forces to take third place in the 800-yard freestyle relay in an NCAA B time of 6:29.04.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Wiesner took sixth place with an NCAA B time of 1:36.96. In the consolation finals, Molzahn took fourth in 1:39.12, only .05 seconds away from a B time of his own.

Tommy Gregory (Cedarburg, Wis.) placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly consolation finals with a time of 49.85.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Gregory, Will Weeks (Tuscon, Ariz.), Molzahn and Scott Speer (Fitchburg, Wis.) was disqualified, but finished with a time of 1:29.33 which would have been fast enough for fifth place.

Josh Bonner placed 25th in the prelims on the 3-meter board leading the Badgers, which did not qualify anyone for the finals.

After day two, the Badgers sit in seventh place with 191 points. The University of Minnesota is leading the competition with 469 points.

Tomorrow the Badgers will compete in 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, platform diving and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
