Badgers wrap up competition at Texas Invitational

MADISON, Wis. – As competition drew to a close at the Texas Invitational on Saturday, the University of Wisconsin swimming and diving teams claimed five top-eight finishes.

Danielle Beckwith started things off on the right foot for Wisconsin, racing in the first even of the day. In the 1650-yard free, Beckwith claimed a 16:25.64 finish, good for fifth place. The time was also fast enough for a NCAA B qualifying time.

In the 100 free, Rebeck Palm and Beckie Thompson raced to eighth and ninth place finishes, respectively. After qualifying for the A finals, Palm posted a time of 49.41 for the Badgers’ second top-eight finish of the day. In the B finals, Thompson clocked in at 49.10 for ninth place. Both times were also NCAA B qualifying times.

Ashley Wanland continued to excel on day three and claimed third place in the 200 breast. With another NCAA B time, Wanland finished in 2:10.20, just .04 seconds behind second place. Wanland claimed a second-place finish on Friday in the 100 breast.

In the 400 free relay, the Wisconsin women’s ‘A’ relay team of Palm, Thompson, Laura Miller and Aja Van Hout raced to a fifth-place finish (3:18.20).

For the men, Daniel Lester had another great day. In the 200 fly, Lester touched in at 1:45.05, good for a second place finish and another NCAA B qualifying time. He also posted a top-five finish in the 100 fly on Thursday.

Overall, the women’s team finished in fifth place with 363 points while the men finished in seventh place with 190 points.

The Badgers return to the pool on Jan. 7 as the two teams take a trip out to Hawaii.
