MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin swimming and diving teams opened their 2011-12 season against Milwaukee on Friday night at the Natatorium. The Badger women topped the Panthers, while the men posted their first loss against the in-state rival.

The women outscored Milwaukee 175-116, finishing first in 12 of 15 events and remain undefeated against the Panthers to start their season off with a 1-0 record.

The divers, Roxanne Fitter and Leslie Cannon, placed in the top two for their events. Fitter swept first, scoring 297.98 in the women's one meter and 288.45 in the three meter, followed by Cannon who took second with 251.63 in the one meter and 263.93 in the three meter.

The men's result came down to the very last event of the meet, the 200-yard free relay. Wisconsin's A relay, consisting of Wes Lagerhausen, Damon Zito, Michael Weiss, and Jeff Morris, swam neck-to-neck with Milwaukee's A relay the entire race.  The Panthers out-touched the Badgers by a mere .44 seconds, to claim their first-ever win over Wisconsin, 149-145.

Without any divers on the men's squad, the Badgers started the meet with a 32-0 deficit to Milwaukee. "It's not an excuse, it's just reality, but we need to be better," Head Coach Whitney Hite said after the meet. "We'll be better."

His first meet as the Badgers head coach, Hite thought this meet was a good starting point, but it is not an ending point.

"We had some good performances and some that needed more work than others," Hite said. "But that's the beauty of our sport. This is who we are, this is where we're starting and we're going to be better."

The Badgers will move on to host Iowa for their first conference competition on Thursday, Oct. 20, back at the Natatorium.
