The Wisconsin mens soccer team dropped a 1-0 loss to Penn State Thursday afternoon in game two of the Big Ten Championships to end the Badgers 2002 season. UW keeper Eric Hanson collected two saves in net.
I was proud of our effort, Wisconsin head coach Jeff Rohrman said. The guys displayed a lot of heart. They battled and competed throughout the game.
Overall, we played well and put up a tough fight. Although this was a disappointing end, it was a solid season and our seniors will be tremendously missed by the program.
Penn State scored its lone goal in the 19th minute. PSUs Jorma Makipaa found the ball on a cross in front of the Wisconsin net in a mob of players and beat Hanson on a header to the lower-right corner of the net. David Walters and Brent Jacquette tallied assists on the eventual game-winner.
The remainder of the game proved to be a strong defensive battle as Wisconsin created opportunities, but could not capitalize on the Badger chances as the clock timed out.
Wisconsin, 9-9-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the Big Ten during the regular season, will attend Thursday nights Big Ten banquet. Several members of the 2002 Badger squad were nominated for All-Big Ten honors. Log on to UWBADGERS.com for the update.
