In the final first-round game of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Championship, No. 11 Penn State advanced to the semifinal round with a 2-0 win over Northwestern.
Penn State got on the board in the 27th minute with a goal by Gabe Bernstein, who beat NU goalkeeper Ryan Pederson off a couple of quick passes from Ricardo Villar and Brent Jacquette. Chad Severs added some insurance at the 30-minute mark off an assist from Ben Dawson.
The Nittany Lions outshot Northwestern 21-2 in the contest.
The Big Ten Championship continues tomorrow with No. 5 seed Michigan taking on top-seeded Indiana at 2:30 p.m. before PSU and Michigan State square off at 5 p.m. Sunday's title game will kick off at 2 p.m.
