MADISON, Wis. - For the third time this season, Chase Rau has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
The award comes on the heels of Rau's fourth shutout of the season, as the freshman held Ohio State's powerful offense scoreless on Sunday. Rau tallied six saves in the match, matching his season-high. With Sunday's shutout, Rau has not allowed a goal in his last 261 minutes in the net, dating back to the second half of UW's Oct. 21 match against Michigan State.
The honor marks the fourth-straight year that Wisconsin has won at least three Big Ten Player of the Week awards as a team, and Rau's three individual awards are the most for a Badger in a single season. Rau was also named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 17 and Oct. 29.
The Badgers will look to ride Rau's spectacular goalkeeping deep into the Big Ten Tournament, which begins Wednesday in Evanston, Ill. Wisconsin will take on Michigan in the quarterfinals at 3:30 p.m (CT).
