The Wisconsin mens soccer team has swept the Big Ten Conferences weekly awards, with senior Brandon Miller earning the leagues Offensive Player of the Week honor and senior Alex Horwath earning Defensive Player of the Week laurels.
Miller earns his first weekly accolade of the 2009 campaign after netting the game-winning goal in the 69th minute of the Badgers' 1-0 triumph over Oakland on Friday. The Vadnais Heights, Minn., native then added a second score in the 82nd minute on Sunday to give the Badgers their 1-1 draw with No. 9 UC Santa Barbara.
Overall, Miller posted four points on three shots while playing all 200 minutes in the Badgers' weekend games and was named to the Milwaukee Panther Invitational all-tournament team for his performance.
He becomes the Badgers first offensive player of the week honoree since Victor Diaz earned the nod on Oct. 27, 2008.
Horwath anchored a Wisconsin defense that allowed just one goal in the Badgers' pair of games in the Milwaukee Panther Invitational. The senior goalkeeper garnered his 16th-career shutout in the Badgers' 1-0 win over Oakland on Friday, snaring five saves.
He then finished with a season-high eight stops Sunday, including two in the second overtime period, to preserve Wisconsins 1-1 draw with ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara.
For his efforts, Horwath was named to the Milwaukee Panther Invitational all-tournament team.
The Big Ten award marks the fourth weekly honor of Horwaths career and his second laurel of the 2009 campaign after also being tabbed for the week of Sept. 7.
