No. 1 ranked Southern Methodist University was too powerful for the Wisconsin mens soccer team as the Mustangs won 6-0 and handed the Badgers their first defeat of the 2001 season. SMUs Luchi Gonzalez led the way for the Mustangs with two goals and one assist. SMU had 17 shots in the game, 11 of which came in the second half.
Senior forward Dominic DaPra, the Badgers leading scorer of the season, had four shots, but was not able get a shot past the solid SMU defense and goalkeeper Byron Foss. Wisconsins goalkeeper, Moriba Baker played 64 minutes and recorded four saves. The six goals allowed were the most goals scored on the Badger defense since Wisconsin lost 3-7 to Ohio State in 1999.
The Badgers move to 5-1 and will compete again Sunday at 1 p.m. CST against the Texas Christian Horned Frogs in their second game of the TCU tournament.
