After losing to No.3 New Mexico Friday night, the University of Wisconsin mens soccer team (4-2-0) beat Butler University 1-0 Sunday afternoon as they concluded play at the TLC Plumbing and Utilities Invite in Albuquerque, N.M. UWs Erik Ortega (Western Springs, Ill.) scored his first goal of the season, the game-winner in the 84th minute of the game.
The Badgers were out-shot 8-9, but made one of their few opportunities count as Ortega scored off and assist from Nick Caronna (Brookfield, Wis.). Butler beat the Badgers in corner kicks 6-4 and saves 5-4 as well, but the Badgers showed discipline by only committing five fouls compared to Butlers 16.
Junior goalkeeper Jake Settle (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) recorded his first shutout of the year and second of his career as he anchored the strong Badger defense that only allowed four shots on goal.
Wisconsins Victor Diaz was given a red card early in the second half, and was not allowed to play the rest of the game. Both teams received three cards, Butler with three yellow cards and the Badgers with one red and two yellow.
The Badger men next play on Friday and Sunday Sept. 23-25 as they take on Washington and Portland in the Husky Fever Classic in Seattle, Wash
