A pair of seniors notched their first goals of the season to lead the Wisconsin mens soccer team to a 2-0 win over Cal State Northridge in the UW-Milwaukee Panther Classic Friday in Milwaukee.
The Badgers (4-0-1), ranked No. 21 in this weeks Soccer America poll, remain unbeaten thanks to goals from seniors athid=5598&deptid=122"> --> Kenny Dix and athid=5211&deptid=122"> --> Victor Diaz , as well as junior athid=6384&deptid=122"> --> Alex Horwaths second shutout in goal of the season. The last time the UW was unbeaten through five games was the 2001 season, when the Badgers opened up 5-0-0.
Friday's victory also marked the Badgers' fourth multiple-goal game in five matches this season. The team scored multiple goals just five times in the entire 2007 campaign.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half, but once the Badgers found the net, it didnt take long for them to build a comfortable lead. Diaz broke open the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 61st minute, beating Northridge goalkeeper Kevin Guppy up high on a shot from 10 yards out.
It then took just 2 minutes, 5 seconds for Dix to double the Badgers lead, as he put the finishing touches on a combo pass from athid=6004&deptid=122"> --> Brandon Miller and athid=5964&deptid=122"> --> Pablo Delgado , who notched his team-leading seventh point of the season with the assist.
From there, 37 minutes of solid defense that included a couple of spectacular saves by Horwath, iced things for the Badgers. Horwath finished with four saves and lowered his goals-against average for the season to 0.93.
The Matadors (3-2-0) launched 13 shots in the second half compared to just seven for the UW and, for the game, Northridge owned a 19-10 edge in shots. The game also saw a total of seven yellow cards handed out.
The Badgers conclude their play in the Panther Classic and wrap up the tournament portion of their schedule at noon Sunday with a match against Binghamton.
