University of Wisconsin junior athid=5964&deptid=122"> --> Pablo Delgado has earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors for his outstanding performance in last weekends Middleton Sports & Fitness Invitational, the league announced Monday.
Delgado played a pivotal role in the Badgers run to the tournament title, assisting teammate athid=6006&deptid=122"> --> Taylor Waspi on the game-winning goal in Fridays 1-0 overtime win over No. 20 Santa Clara and tallying a score of his own in Sundays 3-3 tie with Dayton.
Through just two weekends of play this season, Delgado already has doubled his offensive output from 2007 and leads the Badgers in scoring with six points (two goals and two assists).
Friday, it was Delgados well-placed free kick that allowed Waspi to tap home the game-winner in overtime. On Sunday, he tallied the go-ahead goal for the Badgers in the 49th minute, but an own goal six minutes later forced the UW to settle for a tie with the Flyers.
As a result of Delgados contributions, the Badgers (3-0-1) are off to their best start since 2002 and have cracked the national rankings by debuting at No. 21 in the latest Soccer America poll.
Delgado is the first UW player to earn the Big Tens weekly award for top offensive player since teammate athid=5211&deptid=122"> --> Victor Diaz claimed the honor for the week of Sept. 4, 2006. It is the first league award for Delgado.
The Badgers wrap up the tournament portion of their schedule this weekend by taking on Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Binghamton on Sunday in the UW-Milwaukee Panther Classic.
